Water

Over 650 million people in the world, have no access to safe water

‘Around the world up to 443 million school days are lost every year because of water related illnesses’

Sustainable water management is one of the most important issues of our time. In 2015, water crises ranked the top risk in the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report, when measured in terms of impact. In the 2016 report, it has dropped to third highest. However, the report also states that ‘water crises constitute the biggest risk to the world during the next ten years’.

While death is a worst case scenario, global water crises affects the lives of the world’s poor in more ways than one. People with no access to running water are forced to seek it out. Women and children are given this responsibility in most households and every day they have to make long, arduous, often dangerous journeys to the nearest water source.

They know their water is contaminated and that it will cause them health issues but they simply have to accept that they have no choice but to drink it.

The time it takes to fulfil this chore would otherwise be spent caring for children, generating an income through employment or attending school.

Become part of the Solution

To ensure maximum impact when drilling and tapping into a water source, ILM takes local preferences into account. We build water projects in communal access areas such as Mosques, village centres or adjacent schools; making water collection easy and practical, this methodology even increases school attendance among students at ILM sponsored schools.

After drilling, all the water supplied by our wells is tested for adverse pollutants which, over the years’ have infiltrated the water course in many areas throughout South Asia.

Hand pumps

In the countries that we operate in, a hand pump is the most popular solution for mid to small sized communities. They are quick to install, usually within 2-3 hours, and easy to install with simple tools. They are hard wearing, and can last for over 50 years. What’s more, the materials needed to install a hand pump are readily available making them easy to maintain and repair through the local community.

With every hand pump installed, ILM include water filtration diaphragms to ensure clean water is pumped out. Install a handpump from £150 through our Water Saves Lives appeal

Motor pumps

Motor Pumps are motor powered water pumps. They cost more than a hand pump does, but produce more water to go around. One motor pump can produce enough water for an entire village. Install a motor pump from £300 through our Water Saves Lives appeal.

Water Well

In areas with a bigger population, or for farming communities with a greater need for water, ILM constructs communal water wells and these can provide water for an entire community and all its basic needs. Even families from neighbouring villages can benefit. Install a Water Well from £800 through our Water Saves Lives appeal.
